Glasses

Saturday, November 29th, 2008

My friend and I have a difference of opinion.  When I put my glasses and cups in the cupboard, I turn them upside down.  He puts his glasses and cups into the cupboard right side up.

“Why do you do that?” he asked me.

My answer, “So spiders don’t crawl into them.”  I said this sheepishly because I know that most people don’t understand my love/hate relationship with spiders.  I wouldn’t want a spider to get into my glass and not be able to get out again.

Of course, I asked him why he keeps his cups and glasses right side up.  “To keep the cup rim off the shelf,” he answered confidently.  “The shelf might get dusty.”

We each have our own ways to protect our dishes!

Give Thanks

A Thankful HeartA Thankful Heart

It is time to give thanks.

  1. Freedom to worship, a beautiful building, and loving congregation all go together to give a reason for thanksgiving.
  2. Family and friends are all important.
  3. Pets give a welcome addition to the enrichment of our day.
  4. Music is very important.  I’m thankful that my life is full of music.
  5. Writing and books are also important in my thankful list.
  6. Exercise makes me feel more alive and energetic.
  7. Email keeps me in touch with family and friends who can’t be here in person.
  8. Phone calls mean a lot, too.
  9. I have to add chocolate to my list of things for which I’m thankful.
  10. Memories of important people in my past who taught me valuable lessons, guided and shaped my life, encouraged and blessed me.  My parents are at the top of this list, and my late husband is there at the top, too.

That’s a good beginning list. There are so many more things I could, should mention.  I name them throughout my musings during the day.  When I’m tempted to look at the dismal things that happen, I look at the positives and I see that they outweigh the negatives.  I am blessed.

Who Lives Here

Thursday, November 27th, 2008

Today, Thanksgiving Day, we had a wonderful feast.  My daughter-in-law and my granddaughters prepared and served the meal.  I helped with the clean-up and the dishes.

I was putting food away while others were washing and drying dishes.  I was asked, “Where does this serving platter go?”  I was stumped.  I haven’t had a big meal here in years and I haven’t needed to use that platter. I recognized it as one of my mom’s dishes but I couldn’t recall where I store it.

I had to take the plate to the living room and ask Karen, “Where does this plate go?”  Everyone roared with laughter at me.  Who lives here?  Who should know this answer?  I had ask where I keep my own dish.

But I’m not really losing my mind.  I just didn’t use the dish for at least four years.  It’s not really surprising that I didn’t remember where I keep it.  I still remember lots of things, —but I do keep misplacing things which should be at my fingertips.

Still Snowing

Abundance of Snow

Abundance of Snow

We started our recent episode with snow last week on Thursday.  It snowed so much that I didn’t do my usual Thursday afternoon visiting at the local nursing home.  I came home to be safely indoors out of the snow.  The next day we had so much snow that school was canceled for the day.  It continued to snow on Saturday until evening.  I had a lot of shoveling to do to keep the driveway and porch steps cleared, but I’m so thankful for help which I received.  Two of my neighbors helped me, using their snow blowers.

Sunday was sunny and bright and a little warmer and no new snow! That was great.  Monday there was more snow but it wasn’t a heavy accumulation.  Yesterday in the late afternoon it was snowing again and the roads were slippery, but this morning there wasn’t enough snow to have another no school day.  This afternoon it started snowing again. The last I saw outdoors, it was snowing briskly, but I think it isn’t snowing steadily.

The snow plow came through this morning and piled up a three foot barrier between my driveway and the road.  It was heavy, dense stuff, and very difficult to remove.  My son and grandson tackled the job and cleared the driveway for me.  I am so thankful.

It’s been a good while since I had a nice walk in the snow, but this snow isn’t the kind that I would enjoy walking in.  The sidewalks are slushy and slippery and so is the street.  It’s been difficult for me to get my usual walking done, but I keep trying to put in a lot of steps indoors instead of outdoors.

We’re almost ready for Thanksgiving here at my house.  We are expecting to have a very satisfying celebration tomorrow.  I hope you have many blessings to count at this time.  My brother told me that in the Bible, everywhere rain is mentioned, it is a blessing, except at the time of the flood.  I wonder if snow is also such a blessing. If so, we are abundantly blessed with all the snow we have been getting during this last week.

Early Winter Flowers

Flowering Kale

The flowering kale is pretty all summer long but I think it reaches its peak of attractiveness in early winter.  These two plants are growing in a half barrel at the front of my house.  When it  has rained, the water drops nestle into the curly leaves of the plant and sparkle like diamonds. They even look like cut diamonds and I love to see them like that.

If the flowering kale can make it through the winter, in the spring it will send up a flower stem, but it does not flower until the second  year.  Last year when the flowering kale in this planter reached its peak of beauty, a deer came along and ate it.  I was disappointed but I know that all creatures need to eat.  The long winter would have killed the plant’s beauty any way and this way, a wild creature enjoyed several tasty bites before it went on its way.

How Ridiculous Is This!!

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

How ridiculous is it that a grown woman would lose the shoes she likes best?  That’s what I’ve done.  What I think of as my favorite dress shoes are nowhere to be found any more.  What could I have done with them?  I didn’t think much of it the first time I didn’t know where they were.  Surely they would show up in a day or two, right?  Wrong!  It’s been a month now and my favorite shos are still in hiding.

I cannot remember ever losing a pair of shoes before, so why would I lose them now when I’ve had so much experience at keeping them?

I haven’t given up hope for them even though it’s been over a month now since I saw them last.
