This fox was carved, using a chainsaw, from a block of tree trunk.

Say hello to Foxxy 15 who has been living on my front porch for several weeks now.  Foxxy is a carved, wooden fox.  His creator is Scott Dow, a college educated artist who lives in our town.  He uses a chainsaw to create animals from huge blocks of tree trunks.  He uses a torch to burn them a bit, to give them color, and treats them with linseed oil for protection.

When I saw Scott’s collection of carved animals, I thought I liked the howling wolf best, but I bought the fox for someone else, who admired it most.  Now that Foxxy has been living on my porch and looks so at home there, I like him much better than the wolf, but when the time comes, I will give Foxxy to his new owner.

I can’t even imagine how an artist can make something beautiful like this with a chainsaw, but here’s proof that it can be done.  As for me, I would find it challenging to paint a picture of a fox as realistically as this is.  I don’t do wood carving, but I certainly admire the art.

Picture Surprises

Petunia's bright color contrasts with dark shadow of photographer.

Petunia

This red petunia has such a vibrant, bright color. When I took the photo, the sun was behind me, touching the red petunia with a special warmth.  I focused on the petunia.  I didn’t notice that my shadow was in the picture too.  Later, when I looked at the pictures I’d taken, I saw the contrast in this picture, the darkness of the shadowy figure against the bright red of the petunia.  I like the contrast and think it adds interest to the photo, but it did surprise me that I was a shadowy figure in the picture.
