Blooming Moon Flower

This plant blooms from dusk to morning.

My friend, Chris, gave me this plant which she called a Moon Flower. Someone she knew had too many of these plants and was discarding some of them. It had a long taproot, something like a dandelion. It was very wilted when she brought it that morning, but I found a place for it in the ground and made sure it was well watered. I was surprised how well it adapted to its new home. Within several weeks, it was blooming beautifully. Of course, since it blooms in the night, I often missed seeing the blooms. But for almost two months, it bloomed often, –sometimes three blooms at one time. If the morning was overcast, the blooms stayed open till later in the morning. Now, in August, the plant has begun to shut down for the season.

Chris says the plant spreads easily. I’m hoping that in the spring I’ll have more than one Moon Flower growing in front of my house.

About NJ

I love to write! I realized in 9th grade that I really enjoyed writing. Every two weeks we had assigned topics that we were to use to write an essay. I liked writing the essays. I'm a mom and a grandma. None of my family live nearby, but they visit when they are able to come. I've been a pastor's wife and a grade school teacher. Now I'm retired and enjoying visiting others, and indulging myself in my hobbies, --writing and art activities. I'm very thankful for the blessings in life.

I haven’t heard of this, but the blooms are pretty. I love having plants given to me to replant. Each time I look, I remember where it came from. 🙂

    Hope you’re doing well, Nancy.

    I think of you often.

Nancy, I think this is what we call a Primrose here. They are everywhere here along ponds and lakes and yes, they do spread. How nice to get a plant from a friend! I agree with Sally that it is something that will always remind you of that person.
