This picture is from a previous winter, but it shows what my world is like today. Christina Rosetti’s Christmas carol (In the Bleak Midwinter) says, “Snow was falling, snow on snow.” That is the kind of day we are having today. We have had snow for several weeks now and the weather has been so cold that snow has not been melting. Road crews have been doing a great job keeping the streets plowed but we keep getting more snow. The road plows haven’t been past my house yet today, but they will be soon.
It has been snowing here since just before 9 AM and as evening is approaching, snow is still falling steadily. It seems a major snowstorm will be hitting us over night, and tomorrow morning. Right now, the snow is like filmy curtain over the landscape.
There isn’t much traffic going past my house. Pedestrians are walking in the street. At the intersections piles of snow block entrance to the sidewalks and most sidewalks aren’t cleared any way. Some people are carrying bags of purchases from the convenience store about a block away.
Most of us are hunkering down now, for the duration of this storm, but in all likelihood, our community will be up and active tomorrow morning.
